Who serves on the SSSD Commission?

The SSSD Commission has seven members. These members serve four-year terms that run concurrently. One member is the duly elected Mayor of the City of Spartanburg who is an Ex officio full voting member of the Commission. Three members are the duly elected Commissioners of Public Works of the City of Spartanburg who are Ex officio full voting members of the Commission. The Commission appoints a Chairman and a Vice-Chairman from among its members annually. SSSD Commissioners serve to oversee SSSD governance policies and strategic decisions.

Who do Commissioners supervise?

The Commission has one direct employee: the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). All other staff members report to the CEO through an internal chain of command.

What does the Commission do?

The Commission: Approves the annual budget prepared by the CEO and staff. Approves and adopts rate policy. Establishes governance policy. Approves large contracts and infrastructure investments. Oversees the performance of the CEO. The SSSD Commission does not handle day-to-day operations or individual customer service issues nor directs employees.

The Spartanburg Sanitary Sewer District (SSSD) Commission generally meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month. Meeting dates in 2026 are noted below. The Commission of Public Works of the City of Spartanburg meetings will follow the SSSD meetings.

How to Address the Spartanburg Sanitary Sewer Commission

The SSSD Commission is committed to listening to and addressing the concerns of our community. If you would like to present an issue, question, or request during the Commission’s “Petitions and Requests from the Public” agenda item, please follow the steps below:

Fill out the online Commission Public Comment/Citizen Appearance Form and submit it electronically (or) download the pdf of the form and email it to the Clerk of Commission at the following email: clerkofcommission@sws-sssd.org.
Prepare to Speak: Unless otherwise directed, speakers will have up to three minutes to address the Commission at a regularly scheduled meeting.
ALL forms to address the SSSD Commissioners must be filled out and filed no later than 12:00 p.m. (noon) on the Thursday preceding the Commission meeting you wish to speak at.

The SSSD Commission meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month in January, February, March, April, May, June, August, September, October and on the second Tuesday of December. The Commission does not meet in July or November. Meetings are held in Commission Chambers at 200 Commerce Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
