Spartanburg Water marks commissioner’s longstanding service with dedication ceremony

July 3, 2019.

You may notice a change next time your drive takes you down Southport Road…a new sign marking the new A. Manning Lynch Wastewater Treatment Facility. The facility was formerly known as the Fairforest Wastewater Treatment Plant. It was renamed on June 26 to recognize the Honorable A. Manning Lynch for his 28 years of service as a Spartanburg Sanitary Sewer District Commissioner.

Mr. Lynch is the longest-servicing sewer commissioner in recent history, serving at the helm of the Spartanburg Sanitary Sewer District for nearly a third of its existence. Mr. Lynch served the Spartanburg Sanitary Sewer District since 1990 and guided the District’s commissioners as its chairperson from 1991 to 2018. Under his strong leadership, the Spartanburg Sanitary Sewer District made great strides and marked a number of achievements.

Some of those milestone projects included expanding the sewer district’s service area by 110 square miles, installing and acquiring over 693 miles of sewer line – promoting and contributing to residential, commercial, and industrial growth in Spartanburg County, and increasing the District’s level of service by installing and implementing state-of-the-art technology.

Unlike the roads and power lines you see, the miles of pipes wastewater travels through for treatment aren’t visible. Although out of sight, Mr. Lynch made certain the importance of investing in wastewater infrastructure was never out of mind. With the future always a forethought, his dedication to the development of Spartanburg and to protecting public health have served as the backbone of Spartanburg Sanitary Sewer District’s mission since it was established 90 years ago – in 1929 – and it will be the foundation on which we continue to build for the next 90 years and beyond.
