Viney honored by Conservation Voters of South Carolina

The Conservation Voters of South Carolina have recognized Angela Viney, Commissioner of Public Works, with a Lifetime Conservation Achievement Award. Viney was presented with the honor at the CVSC’s 10th annual Green Tie luncheon on Wednesday.

Viney, a native of West Virginia, was elected to the Commission of Public Works of the City of Spartanburg in 2015. She most recently served as the director of Upstate Forever’s Spartanburg office, but held many roles during her decade with that organization, including Director of Sustainable Communities and Development Director.

For more than 20 years, she worked with the Red Cross in communities from West Virginia to Missouri, eventually making her way to South Carolina, where she was responsible for managing preparations and response to Hurricane Hugo.

As Executive Director of the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, Viney coordinated South Carolina’s first state-wide National Hunting and Fishing Day to offer individuals an opportunity to experience traditional outdoor sports and recreation, with an eye towards expanding perspectives and growing appreciation for conservation efforts.

Viney’s accomplishments in the community have resulted in a number of important projects and partnerships, from the publication of the award-winning book “Web of Water: Reflections of Life Along the Saluda and Reedy Rivers,” to launching “The Air We Breathe,” a collaborative effort to reduce air pollution in Spartanburg.

“Angela’s commitment to conservation goes far beyond her professional and political career,” the CVSC said in the announcement. “She exemplifies a conservation-focused life—installing solar on her home, living in a walkable community and driving an electric vehicle.”

Viney, a graduate of the University of South Carolina, is a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, serves on the Tyger River Foundation Board of Trustees and is heavily involved in the Downtown Spartanburg Rotary. She is the mother of Jeffrey, and a proud grandmother to Cameon, Copeland and Carter.
