A failing septic system can leach excessive nutrients and pollutants into the ground surface directly upslope from our reservoirs. Additionally, a septic drain field can adversely impact the upper water table. Whether through subsurface or failing systems exhibiting above-ground flow, septic waste is a serious concern for any drinking water source.
Over the many years that development has occurred around the reservoirs, septic tanks and leach fields were located on Spartanburg Water property. Spartanburg Water is gathering information where those installations occurred and we plan to establish guidelines for septic tank inspections and cleaning. This is a standard practice at lakes throughout the Southeast.
