Coordinates and directs work activities, equipment, etc., as required to execute work assignments pertaining to the installation, maintenance and/or repair of collection and/or distribution system infrastructure. Distribution system duties will include installing and repairing water services, repairing main lines, street repair, hydrant and valve operations and repair, and flushing of the distribution system; collection system duties involve line cleaning, above-ground physicals, closed circuit television, flow monitoring, and repairs to existing facilities, etc. Specific duties will be assigned according to company needs and/or employee knowledge and abilities.
Supervisory duties include instructing, assigning and reviewing work, planning work, coordinating activities, maintaining standards, acting on employee problems, and recommending disciplinary action as appropriate.
Utilizes Computerized Work Order system to accept and complete work orders or compliance related tasks or assignments. Ensures that all work related documents or forms are completed promptly and efficiently (i.e. water main failures and line stoppages)
Ensures the observance and enforcement of safety and other applicable rules, specifications and regulations as established by the Spartanburg Water and other governing agencies.
Communicates with consumers as necessary to execute service repairs; informs customers of service interruptions and related situations.
Assists in the coordination of work activities with other utilities, city, county and state governments, regulatory agencies, and other departments within the organization.
Investigates and identifies other utility locations by post holing prior to excavating to minimize damages; reports damages and fills out appropriate forms for documentation.
Performs and assists in planned or emergency interruptions or disruptions to customers, involving shutdowns, flushing, etc., within the distribution systems and bypassing, plugging, cleaning, etc., of collection system lines.
Works closely with consumers as required, executing necessary repairs.
Assists team members with and/or performs the installation, maintenance, cleaning, repair and/or replacement of system components such as water mains and accessories, service lines, meters, backflow devices, pipe, fire hydrants and hydrant extensions, new service taps, manholes, street plates, etc. May assist with and/or perform the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks and curb sections, excavated areas, etc. Provides technical assistance, instruction and directions as needed.
Transports equipment to and from job sites.
Performs backfilling, grading and excavation as necessary.
Locates water mains, service and utility lines, valves, etc., as required.
May form, pour and finish concrete and apply asphalt as needed.
Receives, prepares and/or processes various records and reports as required, which may include maps, various personnel forms, material reports, work reports, accident reports, requests, damage reports, vehicle inspection reports, time sheets, graphs, charts, confined entry forms, safety checklists, meter tickets, etc.
Operates and maintains various types of equipment and tools, which may include a wacker tamp, trucks, service truck, combination truck, vacuum truck, tractors, trencher, asphalt roller, loader, jet rodder, cement mixer, air compressors, boring and tapping machines for small diameter service lines, pumps, jack hammer, tapping machine, pipe cutters, metal detector, pipe locator, pressure gauges, diagnostic tools, pump sprayer, lawn care equipment, carpentry tools, plumbing tools, mechanic's tools, various other hand and power tools, etc.
Maintains assigned equipment and machinery in proper working condition.
Observes prescribed safety rules in the performance of activities and uses safety gear as required.
Understands and applies methodologies of thrust restraint on a regular basis, including concrete kickers and collars, rods, and restraint joints.
Performs duties and responsibilities as necessary on an on-call basis after the normal shift has ended.
Performs related duties as required.
