Spartanburg Water has been using water to generate power nearly 90 years at the R.B. Simms Water Treatment Plant. By offsetting costs, hydropower generation complements Spartanburg Water's mission of providing safe drinking water and environmentally sound wastewater treatment while being a responsible steward of the watershed.
Hydropower is a natural resource with even greater potential for the next 90 years and beyond. Significant energy use is required to produce safe drinking water and to treat wastewater to environmentally sound levels. As part of its ongoing commitment to find innovative ways to serve its community, Spartanburg Water is exploring new opportunities to take advantage of capturing the energy produced when water is released. Harnessing this natural process adds value for all Spartanburg Water customers.
