Voluntary  Water Use Restrictions

Spartanburg and most of South Carolina is in a severe drought.  Forecasts are also calling for a drier than normal winter.  As the drought continues, Spartanburg Water officials report that our stream and lake levels continue to drop, which means that measures must be taken to reduce the area’s usage of water.  Spartanburg Water has been encouraging customers to voluntarily conserve water in an effort to continue to maintain adequate water supplies for our community.  Unfortunately, the continued dry weather has caused us to request that customers further reduce water consumption.

Typically, households consume up to 50% of their water by lawn sprinkling and other outdoor use.  Therefore, effective immediately, all customers of Spartanburg Water are asked to observe the following outdoor water use schedule:

Customers with street addresses or rural route numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 should water only on days of the month ending in even numbers.  For example, a customer with the address 222 Main Street would water on August 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, and so on.

Customers with street addresses or rural route numbers ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 should water outside only on days of the month ending in odd numbers.  For example, a customer with the address 225 Main Street would water on August 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, and so on.

These water restrictions are voluntary at this time.  However, if the drought continues and voluntary measures are not effective, mandatory restrictions may become necessary.

Water saving tips for indoor and outdoor use can be found on our web site at www.spartanburgwater.org/.

Conditions will be evaluated daily to determine the status of the outdoor watering restrictions. In addition, during this time, Spartanburg Water will continue to conserve the water that flows into our reservoirs to ensure adequate water supply for our customers. As a result, stream flows in the Pacolet River below Lake Blalock Dam will be reduced to 30 cfs until March 15, 2008.

Spartanburg Water appreciates the support of all of our customers during this time and your voluntary efforts to conserve water for our community.
