Cross Connection

Spartanburg Water customers who use irrigation systems for green lawns will be able to save some green as a result of modifications to the testing requirements for the systems.

At a recent meeting, the Spartanburg Water System Commissioners approved modifications to the policy for testing of residential irrigation systems. The changes could save some customers up to $125 per year.

The Cross Connection Control Policy was established to prevent contamination of the public water system that can occur when the drinking water supply is connected to another water source.  One of the places this can happen is where a residential irrigation or sprinkler system is hooked up to the drinking water supply.

Prior to the changes in the policy that were just approved, customers with low hazard residential sprinkler systems were required to install the same type of protective devices as those with high hazard systems, and to have them tested, repaired or replaced every year.  A certified contractor was required to do the testing.  Spartanburg Water now installs the needed  protection devices for low hazard systems at the time of meter installation or change out,  and has responsibility for replacing them when required.

The changes only apply to low hazard residential sprinkler systems.  The requirements for high hazard lawn irrigation systems have not changed.
